Dalila P. Landscape. Malcolm Avenue, Oakland

This 2,685 sq. ft. contemporary landscape was borne of the growing WANT of a five (5) member family to establish a functional link between the interior and exterior space by adding a new performance deck accessible from the sliding glass door at the dining.

This design composition is broken into four (4) distinct sections separated in the middle by a longitudinal ban (PUZZLE AXIS) running from the west (left) to the east (right) side.
The PUZZLE AXIS is the core of the whole experience because it is centrally located, connecting all the circulation part.
Also, it's juxtaposition of materials creates different experience when in contact with by the end user (i.e. HARD FEEL - cast in place concrete slab walk & mini batu wood deck framed with Mexican pebble stones - SOFT FEEL).

The puzzle axis is framed by two (2) features:
i. Proposed 36" cable guardrail to existing concrete play area at lower level floor (-6') to be accessed by a new floated cable rail stairs to the far east side creating a direct circulation part to the street on the north (front) side.
ii. Reinforced concrete retaining wall running from the west (left) to the east (right) side creating a demarcation between the "puzzle axis" and the up-slope edge.

The south west up-slope side is composed of four (4) tiered seating to create a direct visual engagement with the new performance deck on the opposite side (north west side).
In between the performance deck on the north west side & the retaining wall is a large softscape portion covered with artificial turf to cut down on maintenance time & water consumption if the area was covered in real ground cover.

Functionality & circulation is key to this project making all of the different components area accessible with a number of connecting parts.
